Abhinna
There are three ways a recluse forms his energy.
1. The Brahmanist: He forms his energy as his God. He unites with his God.
2. The Shivaite: He forms his energy as his wife (she must be a pious wife and in same belief). He unites with his wife.
3. The Buddhist: He forms his energy as Jhanas (levels of meditation). He unites with the jhana.
Abhinna is a term for buddhist supernatural power:
1. Pubbenivasanussati-nana (ability to recalling one’s previous lives).
The benefit: A teacher can help his disciple to break his boundary in practice by studying why he is slow in learning, that relate with his past life.
2. Dibbacakkhu-nana (divine eye, ability to see other worlds and see other’s karmic destinations).
The benefit: A teacher can help purifying his disciple so he can cleanse him from the interference of other beings like asura that inhabit his body.
3. Cetopariya-nana (ability to read others’ mind).
The benefit: It helps to solve world problem and someone;s problem by digging the mind of people.
4. Dibbasota-nana (ability to hear sound near and far, and from other worlds eg, brahma worlds, heavens, and lower realms).
The benefit: We can hear when gods talking to each other so we gain additional information that we can use to help people.
5. Iddhividha-nana (magick).
• Adhitthana-iddhi: with power of determination one is able to become many and then become one (like Culapanthaka did)
• Vikubbana-iddhi: power of transformation; ability to assume appearance of a child or other forms, to appear and disappear
• Manomaya-iddhi: with the power of mind he is able to create forms such as tiger, trees, deity, etc.
• Nanavipphara-iddhi: the power of penetrating knowledge, ie power of inherent insight to remain unhurt in danger;
• Samadhivipphara-iddhi: power of concentration :
~ able to walk through walls, earth, and mountain
~ able to dive in and emerge from the earth as in water
~ able to walk on the water as on the earth
~ able to walk through fire without burning
~ able to travel through space like a bird
The benefit: It helps the monk to defend people from threat of bad beings.
6. Asavakkhaya-nana (extinction of mental intoxicants/asavakkhaya).
The benefit: Only Arahants have this. They can see their own intoxicants and able to destroy it. Like one sees several stuffs on desk and he make them in order.
